SAP IBP 2511: Empowering Planners with Transparency and Agility

As planning becomes more connected and data-driven, SAP’s Integrated Business Planning (IBP) 2511 release provides a multitude of enhancements that enable planners to make smarter, faster decisions with greater confidence.

We spoke to a couple of our SAP supply chain planning experts to hear what stood out to them in this latest release, from AI-powered optimisation to seamless collaboration:

Smarter Planning with AI & Joule

SAP’s generative AI assistant, Joule, is now embedded across the IBP web interface. Planners can use natural language to run jobs, check master data consistency and generate summaries, saving time and allowing greater focus on strategic decisions.

One of the most impactful updates is AI-assisted supply optimiser explanations for time-series planning. Joule can now translate complex optimisation results into plain language, meaning no more digging through logs to find reasons for unfulfilled demand. This brings new levels of transparency and actionability to supply optimisation.

For early adopter Excel users with Premium AI, natural language can now be used to create formatting rules, making personalised planning views more accessible, even to non-technical users.

Excel Add-In and Analytics: Power Meets Simplicity

The Excel add-in continues to improve with intuitive advanced filtering options like “starts with,” “contains” and numerical comparisons, helping planners zero in on the data that matters, fast.

New job definition integration allows users to run and monitor jobs directly from Excel using personalised templates. This streamlines localised optimisations and data syncs, keeping planners focused on what’s relevant.

On the analytics side, updates to the analytics stories web app such as zero-data filtering, top and bottom ranking and dropdown resizing make reports cleaner and easier to interpret.

A key technical update is that macros now use form controls instead of ActiveX, aligning with Microsoft’s latest standards. While this change requires some migration effort, it ensures long-term compatibility and stability.

Unified Planning with the Harmonised Planning Area

The Harmonised Planning Area (HPA) continues to evolve, offering best practice content that brings together order-based and time-series planning. This integration supports more flexible planning models, reduces silos and improves responsiveness.

Best practices, including test scripts and flowcharts, are now available via Signavio process navigator to help customers understand and apply HPA effectively.

Subcontracting within order-based planning has also been enhanced. Real-time integration with S/4HANA and ECC now enables automatic creation of subcontracting purchase requisitions alongside stock-transfer requests. IBP also supports converting these into transportation loads, streamlining the flow of components and finished goods to subcontractors. These updates improve visibility, responsiveness and alignment between planning and execution

Additional features available with HPA include:

  • Detailed pegging API: Full visibility of supply-demand linkages
  • Optimiser quota calculation: Dynamic sourcing ratios based on actual capacity
  • Telescopic optimisation: Aggregates and disaggregates time buckets while keeping plan results consistent
  • Recency weighting for supply lead time: New key figures improve responsiveness and reduce reliance on outdated data
  • MRP area visualisation: View the supply chain network app by MRP area for improved transparency

Real-Time Collaboration with SAP IBP

Collaboration just got easier. Planners can send messages directly from IBP apps to Microsoft Teams during the S&OP process, enabling faster communication and decision-making across departments.

It’s not just Teams that IBP is collaborating with. IBP also integrates with WalkMe Premium, a digital adoption platform that overlays the Fiori interface with contextual step-by-step walkthroughs, tooltips, pop-ups and automated workflows. This helps accelerate onboarding, increase adoption and simplify change management directly within IBP.

Master Data Management: Smarter, Faster and More Intuitive

The new manage master data app improves usability with expanded search and an “explore related data” function, allowing users to drill down quickly and resolve issues faster. This boosts data accuracy and reduces troubleshooting time.

SAP IBP 2511 also introduces a dedicated order-based planning order-based planning (OBP) master data synchronisation job template. Planners can manually or automatically sync master data—such as products, resources and lanes—between IBP and OBP, detect discrepancies and reconcile them through validated updates.

Out With the Old: Features Being Retired

  • The legacy planning filters app has been retired. Migrate to the new version by the end of November to retain filters
  • The legacy application jobs catalog is being phased out. Update business catalogs to avoid authorisation issues
  • Excel add-in ActiveX controls are discontinued. Shift to form controls for compatibility and future support
  • Member sorting and grouping in planning views is no longer supported in the IBP Excel add-in. Revise templates and workflows as needed
