What is SAP Barcode Scanning?

 

Unlike other SAP standard mobile solutions, PreBilt is designed for SAP barcode scanning. The core PreBilt framework is centred around intelligent barcode management, with the ability to scan complex barcodes, decode the relevant information and populate the data into the correct fields within the PreBilt screen.

PreBilt can read both traditional 1D linear barcodes and the newer 2D matrix barcodes, such as QR codes. Future proofed to move with your evolving operation, PreBilt can work with the range of barcodes currently used by customers and their suppliers, with the flexibility to cater for new barcode technology as it is developed.

Alternative SAP Barcode Scanning Solutions

SAP standard mobile solutions, such as Fiori, Personas and ITS Mobile, are often considered for a warehouse mobile solution. However, the specific requirements should be carefully considered, as some of these solutions are not designed for SAP barcode scanning and do not have the capabilities required to execute warehouse tasks.

SAP ITS Mobile

ITS Mobile is SAP’s standard mobile solution for SAP barcode scanning and is provided as standard with SAP Warehouse Management (WM) and SAP Extended Warehouse Management (EWM). Specifically developed for supply chain transactions, ITS Mobile is SAP’s only mobile solution that fully supports SAP barcode scanning.

ITS Mobile does have many useability limitations. Screen layouts are complex and cluttered, with every field displayed on screen, even if it is not needed, making it difficult and confusing to use for operators. Further compounding this, users are required to have knowledge of extensive codes and acronyms in order to correctly select function and exception codes required for task execution.

Screen layouts cannot be easily customised, with fields not clearly labelled and fields can only be repositioned on screen manually, with any changes to the screen layout requiring significant development work.

ITS Mobile also has poor connection handling, if an operator completes SAP barcode scanning and then the network drops out before they confirm the scan, once they try to confirm on screen, ITS Mobile will log them out and they will lose all scan data. Once the connection is restored, the user will need to log in again and all data will be lost so they will need to start the task again.

 

SAP Fiori

SAP Fiori is a design language, utilizing UI5 technology, that enables apps to be created with a more consumer-feel. The solution delivers a role-based user experience, enabling users to access all their tasks across multiple business functions through a tile-based screen layout.

Fiori is not designed for SAP barcode scanning, instead it was initially developed as a more user-friendly way to undertake standard tasks across functions such as HR, sales and finance, including viewing sales orders, purchase order requisition or approving timesheets.

Fiori is focused on the frontend UI and is designed for simple workflows and tasks, rather than complex supply chain processes. It is not set up to easily cater for SAP barcode scanning and significant development work would be required to facilitate this functionality.

There are also very limited apps available for EWM processes, for many SAP barcode scanning supply chain transactions, an application using Fiori would need to be built from scratch. There are also limited Fiori apps available on SAP ECC, with all recent Fiori apps designed to be used with S/4HANA on-premise or in the cloud.

SAP Personas  

SAP Personas is one of SAP’s UI solutions for personalising SAP GUI and mobile screens. Personas uses ‘flavours’ to apply personalisation to specific transactions by allowing screen designs to be altered to make them more user friendly.  

SAP Personas is designed for desktop use and cannot carry out SAP barcode scanning on mobile devices. The use cases for the solution are simple transactions, which do not have multiple steps and are executed on desktops, for business functions such as HR, finance and customer service. 

Personas is used for general screen layouts and purely changes the look of screens, without improving useability and it does not optimise EWM for SAP barcode scanning transactions.
